Did you know it’s illegal to release this bird?

Hobbyists in India keeps many foreignorigin birds at home but in case they release it in the open, they can get charged under the Indian Forest Act and Forest Conservation Act.

A while back a radio channel, on the pretext of being humane, was asking listeners to report anyone who kept any kind of bird at home, so they could take action. Then a birdloving group got a lawyer to speak to the channel and stop the announcement.

You see, if released in the open, the exotic species would encroach on native Indian birds’ food and space. And if they mate with local birds, their chicks would be hybrids, gradually eradicating Indian birds

It is illegal to cage any Indian bird. So you cannot have a pet parrot or koyal.

You can keep foreignorigin birds but will need ownership licence for species like Macaws and Cockatoos.

The exotic bird industry employs some 70 lakh people in Bengal alone. In nature, the mother bird feeds only the strongest chicks, assuming the weak ones would perish anyway. But in homes, bird lovers handfeed the weaklings till they survive

Some species like Sun Conure and Moluccan Cockatoo have become endangered in their native countries but are thriving in Indian homes. The Spix's Macaw was declared extinct in South American jungles but is being reintroduced now from conservation projects around the world.

Next time we visit a bird show, along with the beauty of the birds, let’s also appreciate the effort of the bird keepers
