DOURO RIVER CRUISE | PORTUGAL. A stunning trip in the northern region of Portugal with the beauties of the Douro Valley.

The Douro Valley is the most famous wine region in Portugal. Over there, the vineyards sway downhill on the two banks of the river, offering visitors breathtaking views —which perfectly match a glass of wine.

The Douro River rises in Spain and flows into the Atlantic, in the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, where the Port wine cellars are located.

Among Peso da Régua and Pinhão are some of the main Portuguese wineries, famous names around the world, such as Quinta da Pacheca and Quinta dos Murças. It took fame for producing port wine.

The Douro has much more to offer: white and red wines of the highest level, hotels with swimming pools and stunning views, plus lots of history and great restaurants.

Travel Tips:
There are several cruise operators from the cities of PORTO and VILA NOVA DE GAIA.

There are cruise options on the Douro River of 50 minutes through the riverside area of Porto, one day and programs of up to 3 days. This last option may cost, depending on the vessel, 399 euros.

The most common tour is the one day, leaving the Port by boat, arriving in the city of Peso da Régua and returning by train (train) to Porto.

Taking a cruise on the Douro River is ideal for those who like a tour program with groups. On the tour you can admire the beautiful landscapes of Porto until the Peso da Régua, where port wine is produced.

The best time to visit, in my opinion, is in the months of May, June and July.

Where to stay in the Douro Valley:
The most beautiful and visited stretch of the Douro Valley is between the cities of Peso da Régua and Pinhão. It is there that are the best known wineries, a greater number of lodgings and restaurants and finally, but not least, the most beautiful views, with the terraces of vineyards sparred on the slopes of the hills towards the Douro.

= Peso da Régua is a sunny city located on the bank of the Douro River, at the western end of the Northern Region of Portugal.

This city became a major port wine distribution center during the 13th century, and today it remains an important crossing of transport roads due to the gigantic IP3 bridge.

= Pinhão is a small village situated on a charming curve of the Douro River, situated 20 kilometers above the city of Peso da Régua.

This village is surrounded by terraces, where one of the best port wines is produced in the world. To highlight, in addition to the several wineries, the beautiful train station, decorated with tiles images of the harvest.

Curiosities of the Dams and Douro Locks:

There are 5 dams that cross the Douro, making its course navigable and safe. From Foz, in Porto, to Barca d'Alva, there are 5 magnificent Douro dams.
