About NDWI

The Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) is a remote sensing technique used to assess the presence and extent of water bodies or vegetation in satellite imagery. It is derived from the analysis of different spectral bands captured by sensors on satellites like Landsat 8. NDWI is calculated using the following formula:
NDWI = (Band Green Band Near Infrared) / (Band Green + Band Near Infrared)
NDWI = (B03 B05) / (B03 + B05)
In Landsat 8's context, the typical band combination used for NDWI calculation involves using the Green (Band 3) and Near Infrared (Band 5) bands. These bands are sensitive to the characteristics of water and vegetation, making them suitable for assessing water content and vegetation density.

The NDWI values range from 1 to 1, with higher values generally indicating the presence of water bodies, while lower values represent nonwater surfaces like land. Here's how to interpret the NDWI values:

Values closer to 1: Typically represent water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Values closer to 0: Correspond to land surfaces, indicating the absence of or limited water content.
Negative values: Could indicate clouds, snow, or other nonwater features. In some cases, negative values might also be used to detect shadows.

NDWI is widely used in various applications, including water resource management, land cover classification, environmental monitoring, and studies related to vegetation health.
