It is derived from the analysis of satellite or aerial imagery using a technique called band ratio.
The formula for calculating the Urban Builtup Index (UBI) using band ratio is:
UBI = (Band 7) / (Band 6)
In this formula, higher values of the UBI indicate a higher density of builtup structures, which are characteristic of urban areas. Lower values of the UBI suggest the presence of natural features like vegetation or water bodies.
The UBI can be further categorized into different classes or zones to provide more detailed information about the urban environment. For instance:
• Low UBI values: Correspond to rural or natural areas.
• Moderate UBI values: Indicate transitioning zones or suburban areas with a mix of natural and builtup features.
