There are currently 71 female sworn officers who hold different ranks and work in different units within the Durham Police Department. We have three female sworn officers who serve on the executive command staff, which include Chief Patrice Andrews, Deputy Chief Melissa Bishop, and Deputy Chief Shari Montgomery.

Durham PD is part of the 30x30 initiative, which is a coalition of police leaders, researchers, and professional organizations who have set the goal to raise the number of women in police recruit classes to 30% by 2030. Nationwide, women make up 12% of sworn officers and only 3% of police leadership in the U.S. Durham PD is above the national average, as 17 percent of our sworn officers are females.

Aside from achieving gender equity among officers, increasing the number of female officers can have many positive impacts in the community. For instance, women proportionally have fewer useofforce and citizen complaints. In addition, they tend to be more effective in their interactions with diverse communities.
