WHAT IS AN NDE OR NEARDEATH EXPERIENCE? Researchers have determined that they NOT hallucinations and they are NOT caused by a dying brain. A neardeath experience (NDE) is typically a profound, life changing, intensely emotional experience that usually occurs during a clinical crisis and has common characteristics and aftereffects. It is not a dream, hallucination, or mental illness (Greyson, 1983). There are no predictive variables to identify who will have an NDE. They happen to people of all ages, religions, socioeconomic groups, cultures, educational backgrounds, and belief systems. They occur under a variety of circumstances such as accidents, neardrownings, illnesses, combat, surgical procedures, and childbirth. Following an neardeath, experiencers (NDErs) often display some common aftereffects. Research has established a set of common neardeath experience characteristics and longterm aftereffects.

Common theories used to explain neardeath experiences have been proven inadequate by neardeath experience researchers and others. Research has shown neardeath experiences are NOT caused by the following:

· Dying brain (e.g., the brain is hallucinating as cells begin to die)
· Lack of oxygen to the brain· Byproduct of brain disorders
· Medication and neurochemical reactions in general· Hallucinations from altered blood gas levels (e.g., hypoxia or hypercapnia)
· Brain mechanisms designed to make dying easier for humans
· Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) being released by the body
