TEDx Talks

As a Film and Media Studies and Philosophy scholar, Malia Kiang has spent a lot of time thinking about the end of the world. In her talk, she shares what it was like to live through the 2018 false missile alert in Hawai’i and how she found unexpected comfort in apocalyptic films. Drawing from personal experience and media theory, she proposes that frightening fictions can prepare us to better appreciate and come to terms with our everyday challenges.

Malia Kiang is a Tufts senior majoring in Film & Media Studies with a minor in Philosophy. In addition to her studies, Malia develops curriculum and handson educational workshops in entrepreneurship for K12 students and enjoys performing with her a cappella group, Enchanted. She is from Honolulu, Hawai’i and has a deep love and appreciation for film and television. Her mustwatch films include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ratatouille, and Grave of the Fireflies. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
