DUNE Soundtrack (by Stéphane Picq) on AdLib + MT-32 + AdLib Gold

Follow
the Sound Card database

Combined soundtracks on three different music modules. All three soundtracks were recorded on real hardware. AdLib and AdLib Gold on a downclocked Pentium II, and MT32 through Dosbox with a real MT32 attached. Here are some observations after having done this exercise:
There are some skipped notes in the AdLib version, mostly in the "Sietch" song. This missing time made matching the songs together a bit more difficult.
The same song doesn't necessarily have the same length depending on which soundcard you're listening it on. I don't know WHY this is. Hypothesis is that Stéphane Picq recomposed the songs specifically for each soundcard.
I recorded the AdLib versions on the floppy version of Dune, while the MT32 version used the CD version. Maybe that accounts for differences in soundtrack length?

After listening to this for a while, I find that this combined version brings out the strengths of each version, while doing a good job of hiding flaws. It's hard to return to the standard individual soundcard version of each afterwards.

Stéphane Picq has remastered SPICE OPERA in 2024. Give it a listen!
