Many people who travel by air feel intense pain and blockage in the ear, especially when the plane is descending or ascending. This condition is called Aeroplane Ear or barotrauma of the ear or aerotitis media. The airplane ear occurs mainly due to an increase in negative pressure in the middle ear, which leads to acute pain.

Frequent upper respiratory tract infections like colds or viral may cause discomfort in the ear.
There is inflammation in the Eustachian tube during viral or upper airway infections like cold, cough, or allergy, which connects the nose to the ear.
When there is a change in pressure or an increase in the negative pressure, there is a blockage in the connecting tube, which causes shooting pain.

We advise our patients to do the Valsalva Manoeuvre. In this, we hold the nose and exhale and try to open our ears. If the ear keeps opening during flight during exhalation by the nose, there is significantly less chance of an airplane ear.
And the second thing is we must keep chewing candy or taking a sip of water now and then. The purpose behind this is during swallow motion, the Eustachian tube frequently keeps opening, allowing air to enter, so there is less chance of an airplane ear.
If you have any respiratory infection during the flight, you must have decongestant or nose drops.
Often this pain sweeps away in two to three days, but if the pain persists, there might be the possibility of infection inside the ear, for which you must seek a doctor's advice.
