Earl Bostic is somebody who’s current place in the wide world of jazz is wildly underrepresented, but at the same time, perfectly represented.
On one hand, he made a string of R&B hits throughout the early 50s and is considered at best by today’s players, an incredibly wellrounded blues player.
But on the other hand, you have household names like Benny Golson, Lou Donaldson, Art Blakey and even Coltrane praising him as one of the greatest technicians of the saxophone, ever!
How can you go from generic blues guy, to mastery of one’s craft? The answer to that, is this recording (and Up There In Orbit) this recording is what the masters mean by, "the best technician I ever heard in my life,"
