Gibraltar is one place I've wanted to visit for quite some time now and I finally got round to it. It is notorious for being one of the most dangerous airports in the world and one of the most unique runways. The airport is over shadowed by the famous Gibraltar rock, standing tall at just over 1300ft! The rock can cause some very strong downward drafts and has been known to create severe wake turbulence because the wind is forced around the rock or over the top of it. This also leads to frequent low cloud coverage as the clouds are forced over the top of the rock and then sink down the hillside towards the airport & town. Not only all of this but it's the only airport to have a main road which crosses the runway! Pedestrians and cars can just walk across the runway until there is a plane coming and then the barriers are dropped just like a level crossing for trains!
Despite all these obstacles our pilot made the landing look effortless and we made a perfect arrival, with beautiful views over the Moroccan coast and the straight of Gibraltar (Where the Atlantic Ocean & Mediterranean meet)
