Ecumenical Discussion: The Metaphysics of Deification - Catholic and Orthodox Perspectives

Follow
Exploring the Faith

Deification, also known as theosis, is the belief that the culmination of the moral and spiritual life is union with God, which involves a participation in the Inner Life of God. This idea is one of the most important in both Scripture and in the postScriptural history of the Church; nonetheless, it is also one of the most overlooked and misunderstood.

In this video, I take part in an ecumenical discussion with Fr. Peter Totleben, O.P., a Catholic theologian and priest of the Dominican Order currently taking part in research and teaching at the Pontifical St. Thomas Aquinas Institute (Angelicum) in Rome, and Dr. Norman Russell, an Eastern Orthodox theologian and honorary research fellow at St. Stephen's House, Oxford, in which we compare the metaphysical presuppositions of the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic view on deification.
