Dr. Joe DeMarco, chiropractor and owner of OcraMed Health, discusses pullup elbow.

Pullup elbow is the term I use to describe medial epicondylitis (golfers elbow) among people who lift weights. It is pain on the inside of the elbow at the medial epicondyle. A common exercise that creates this pain is pullups, however, any back exercise can also cause this type of injury.

If you are suffering from pullup elbow, there is a very good chance that you are performing your pullups incorrectly. The pain along the inside of the elbow is often the result of using your forearm flexors to help pull your chin over the bar once you become fatigued. This will create a significant amount of stress on the forearm flexor muscles resulting in inflammation of the tendon that attaches to the medial epicondyle. The final result is significant pain on the inside of the elbow.

In the first part of this video, I discuss how to perform pullups (and other back exercises) correctly to avoid this type of injury. In the second part of the video, I demonstrate fascial release techniques to treat the injury.
