Electromagnetic Adventures #3: Permanent magnets... in space!

Follow
CERN

Not all particle detectors assembled at CERN are one hundred metres below the ground. In fact, one of them is currently up in space! This #TeachingTuesday, we wrap up our Electromagnetic Adventures miniseries by focusing on the heart of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer detector: a giant ring of permanent magnets aboard the International Space Station! We’ll look at the structure of matter across many length scales to understand how permanent magnets work, and discover along the way that magnetism comes in more flavours than you’d expect. As part of the education portfolio of #CERNScienceGateway, the #CERNSolvayEducation programme was launched by CERN jointly with ‪@SolvayGroup‬ for the #STEMeducation of highschoolers. It is designed for teenagers who want to go beyond highschool physics and get an introduction to CERN #physics and #technology. In each video, you can test your understanding by answering quiz questions. If you are at least 16 years old, you can enrol for free in the online CERNSolvay Education Programme towards obtaining a digital certificate, which will allow you to apply for a CERNSolvay residential student camp.
