Element #16 Sulfur

Today I am working with the element Sulfur. Sulfur is an interesting element. It forms different allotropes at different temperatures and pressures and changes color when doing so. It it violently reactive with metals and burns in oxygen to make SO2. Sulfur is the king of horrible smells. It forms a vast array of unbelievably foul compounds, such as the toxic, acidic and extremely smelly sulfur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) the gas responsible for the smell of rotten eggs, thiols, for example ethanethiol CH3CH2SH gives propane the smell of rotten eggs or flatulence so that you know when your flammable gas is leaking BEFORE you light a match. Sulfur can be dissolved in heated nonpolar solvents such as toluene (C6H5CH3), then cooled to precipitate crystals. There's a lot of chemistry to be done with sulfur, but it's a running joke that nobody wants to do it because it REEKS. It took several cycles through the washing machine to get the smell out of my lab coat!!! Enjoy!
