Since I was teaching computers, everyone in elementary school did this activity (grades 15). We saw some great improvements. The key is to keep the level easy for a while, and let them get those fast math skills strengthened. I really liked this activity for struggling students, because each student is recognized each time the personal record is broken.

Tips:
Do the activity consistently to see large improvement over the year.

The jump from level 5 to level 10 is pretty large. Keep them at 5 so that they really master the easy math facts and they can do them quickly. Once you move to 10, it's hard to go back.

Once you move to 10, or do addition and subtraction at the same time, you need a new worksheet because the scores drop.

Students try to compare their scores. Emphasize that the final score is only for their eyes (and the teachers), and not to worry about the final score. Just do your best and try to beat your personal record. If you do this practice consistently, everyone improves.
