Before diving into the new changes, let's take a moment to understand why Tesla had to make modifications to the 4680 battery. The firstgeneration 4680 batteries were somewhat disappointing in terms of charging performance and energy density. Additionally, Tesla struggled to produce cathodes using their dry battery electrode (DBE) coating process. If you're unfamiliar, DBE coating reduces manufacturing time tremendously, with significant cost benefits. However, mastering this revolutionary process proved challenging and hindered Tesla's battery efforts. The situation worsened when the inventor of the dry electrode coating left the company last year.

Despite recent positive updates, such as Tesla's Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, claiming during the Q1 earnings call that the 4680 ramp is ahead of the Cybertruck ramp and that 4680 battery production can support over 1,000 Cybertrucks per week—an increase of about 18%20% or roughly 7 gigawatthours per year—if Tesla cannot address the core performance issues of the 4680 battery, mass production will still result in a subpar choice for future vehicle models.
