Elvas OTE is a Portuguese border town in the district of Portalegre, in the Alentejo region and in the Alto Alentejo subregion, with 16084 inhabitants (2021).

It is the seat of the municipality of Elvas with an area of ​​631.29 km² and 20,753 inhabitants (2021), subdivided into 7 parishes.

The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Arronches, to the northeast by Campo Maior, to the southeast by the municipality of Olivença, disputed by Portugal and Spain, to the east by the Spanish municipality of Badajoz, to the south by Alandroal and Vila Viçosa and to the west by Borba and through Monforte.

Despite Portalegre being the district capital, Elvas is the largest city in the district of Portalegre.

At the gates of Spain, only 8 km (as the crow flies) from the city of Badajoz, Elvas was the most important stronghold on the Portuguese border, the most fortified city in Europe, having been nicknamed "Queen of the Border".
