The concept of Shame is very difficult to outline not all psychologists agree on a formal definition. In this video I talk about a kind of "protoshame," which might involve biological components that we share with nonhuman animals, and the fully developed notion of shame, which includes selfconsciousness, symbolic thought, and an awareness of potential judgment or criticism in the eyes of some other.

The last part of the video differentiates Shame from Guilt and gives some examples of how each might emerge in our everyday interactions with our children.
