Get ready to hear an epic tale as old as time… as we tell the story of the beast with a heart of flame! In this sketch, we dive into endocarditis, which is inflammation of the endocardial surface (or inner lining) of the heart. It can be infectious (most commonly due to Staph. aureus) or noninfectious, as in the case of cancer (nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis, or NBTE) and lupus. Infective endocarditis leads to vegetations on heart valves, potentially causing systemic emboli like strokes or pulmonary embolisms. Clinical signs include fever, new heart murmurs, skin petechiae, and splinter hemorrhages. Risk factors include poor dental health and IV drug use, which can introduce bacteria into the bloodstream.
