Energy Tap | Generative Ambient Patch in VCV Rack 2

Sometimes you hear a combination of modules that sound so good together that you know you'll have to do something with it.

In this case, the inspiration came from a tutorial by Omri Cohen for the Dark Energy module. As soon as the sound of the Dark Energy module being put through the Tap Dancer delay entered my ears, I was hooked. The combination of these modules also provided the name for this song: Dark Energy Tap Dancer . My first choice was "Dark Energy Tap", but the "Dark" part doesn't really seem to apply to the song itself.

Instead of using a fixed note sequence to drive the Dark Energy oscillator (like in the tutorial), the ProbKey module generates a slowly evolving sequence here. This is passed through a quantizer that will limit the sequence to the notes of a chord sequence (similar to what was done in the tutorial). Instead of one fixed chord sequence, there are five different sequences programmed into Foundry that are switched between at random. These chord sequences will also drive the bass line, which will be playing the root and fifth of the chord.

To give some additional mood and to emphasize the chords, the root note is triggered occasionaly a couple octaves higher through an FMOP that fades in and out, after which it is spread out by another Tap Dancer delay.

Some further variation is introduced with a second Dark Energy oscillator. Instead of playing randomly generated sequences, eight different fixed sequences have been programmed on another track in the Foundry module. Every eight measures, a different sequence can be activated (depending on a probability trigger), and the output of this voice will be added to the mix and random intervals. It's level is kept low however, so that it doesn't overpower the rest of the song.
