Paetongtarn, just days before her 38th birthday, followed in her father Thaksin’s footsteps, and became Thailand’s 31st and youngestever Prime Minister.

In modern times, there are many “political families” that hold power over their own countries. However, it is rare for one to survive for more than 20 years, through coups and exiles, and still make a comeback. The Thaksin Shinawatra family of Thailand is one classic example.

Starting from when Thaksin became Prime Minister in 2001, this political family which is linked by blood and marriage, has produced four Thai Prime Ministers spanning two generations in 23 years.

How much will Paetongtarn, who lacks governing experience, rely on her father’s political wisdom? Will she be able to control the situation, balance the factional conflicts within the ruling coalition, and avoid being ousted in a coup like her father and aunt?
