Bastiaan van Hoorn is skipper on the tugboat Adriaan of the Dutch towage company Kotug. De Adriaan was built in 1958 and in the engine room stands a Stork Ricardo ARO 216 of 375 hp from 1956. ‘In those days it was a strong boat, with almost 400 hp,’ tells skipper Van Hoorn. ‘She’s still under license and almost wholly original. We exploit it commercially and the proceeds go into the boat.’ Skipper Van Hoorn demonstrates the greasing and cranking of the engine, and treats us to some maneuvering on the Old Maas.
