Remotely controlled underwater vehicles are used in a variety of contexts, including monitoring coral reef health, installing offshore wind turbines, and exploring shipwrecks. In this section, you will design, build, and test a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for underwater exploration. You can read more about the course at this detailed course description. You will learn:
— Pressure, buoyancy, and stability; basic electrical circuits; and systems design
— Basic manufacturing skills including 3D modeling and printing, soldering, and construction
— Team communication and collaboration, technical documentation (presentations and reports), probability, statistics, risk, and ethics
Engineering 100 is the start of a University of Michigan engineer's journey. Students take part in a realworld project that utilizes the fundamentals of their section's topic. From microprocessors to rockets to food, there are several mediums for students to pick from; all cover the same fundamentals (employ the engineer design process, communicate effectively as an engineer, collaborate in diverse teams, understand and practice professional engineering values).
