The Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) is a vegetation index used in remote sensing to assess the health and density of vegetation cover on the Earth's surface. It is an improvement over the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and was developed to address some of the limitations of NDVI, especially in regions with high biomass or where atmospheric conditions can affect the satellite imagery.

The formula for calculating EVI is as follows:

EVI = G * ((NIR RED) / (NIR + C1 * RED C2 * BLUE + L))

Where:
NIR is the NearInfrared band reflectance.
RED is the Red band reflectance.
BLUE is the Blue band reflectance.
L is a canopy background adjustment factor.
C1 and C2 are coefficients designed to minimize the effect of atmospheric influences.
G is the gain factor to scale the index values to a desired range.
EVI values typically range from 1 to 1, with higher values indicating healthier and denser vegetation cover. Researchers and environmental scientists often use EVI in applications such as monitoring vegetation health, estimating vegetation biomass, and assessing land cover changes in remote sensing studies.
