Removing the resonant head from a bass drum is a common approach in the studio and is often something you can run into in live performance environments. In this episode, we explore different tuning and muffling approaches to get the most out of this setup whether you chose it or got stuck with it. At the end, we'll bring it back into perspective by mounting the reso head again to illustrate the change in tone and fullness of sound.

As with our previous bass drum videos, we're utilizing an AKG D112 to help capture the onaxis sound of the bass drum. With this video, we decided to demonstrate the sound of the D112 inside the bass drum once the resonant head has been removed, as this is the most common dynamic microphone placement we see for a no reso bass drum.

Drum Used: Pearl Masters Custom Extra Maple (MRX)
Batter Head: Evans Drumheads UV1 EQ4
Resonant Head: Evans Calftone w/Porthole

1:52 :: Wide open tuning at medium range for batter & reso/no muffling w/reso head intact
3:10 :: No change to tuning or muffling, reso head removed (A/B comparison)
5:02 :: Pillow added for widecontact muffling against batter head
5:50 :: Batter lowered to justaboveawrinkle
8:12 :: Same tuning & muffling with the addition of the resonant head.
