More important than an epiphany to the success of any personal statement is intentionality.

An epiphany, or a eureka moment, is a key moment like the sun shining through the clouds that tells you clearly what path is for you. Most people have not had a eureka moment.

More important than a eureka moment is intentionality in making decisions from one step to the next. This may start with an epiphany, but it can also start with any reasonable starting point.

Intentionality refers to how you describe the sequence of your experiences in your personal statement. You do so by describing a clear passion and desire at each step, and an understanding of how each step pointed you in the direction of the program or specialty you are applying to. Intentionality refers to how you narrate your story in your personal statement, even if it was not so clear when you were making the decisions at the different points in your path. Think, therefore, about why you made each decision when you did.

Even if you have had a eureka moment, that is not enough for a personal statement. You must follow that with intentionality in the path you pursued after that moment.
