EPISODE 4: Glassing the hull!- Building a wood strip kayak

Building a kayak!
From scratch!
With the hull all sanded and stained, the next step is to wrap the outside with fiberglass and epoxy. Short video this time, since this process is pretty fun to work through and is kind of its own major step in the kayak building procedure. Plus watching the glass turn transparent and the stained wood showing through the saturated fabric was super neat to watch!
Here I'm using 4oz S glass from ‪@FiberglassSupply‬ along with Resin Research 2000CE epoxy and 2100F fast hardener.
First step after thoroughly cleaning any dust off of the hull is to lay out the cloth at a slight bias so it conforms to the sharper corners and edges of the boat.
Next is a saturation coat of regular epoxy to soak the cloth, seal the wood, and bond the fabric to the wood. After letting the saturation coat cure a couple hours until tacky, I added a second fill coat of thickened epoxy. I laid on this coat pretty thick, so as to build up enough bulk to sand down later before adding further fill coats after the deck and hull are joined.

And with that, the exterior of the hull is "done"! Well, done for now.
In the next video, we'll flip the hull and sand/ fiberglass the interior.

Thanks for watching!
