Bastet (also spelled Bast or Baast) is an ancient Egyptian goddess who was originally worshipped in the city of Bubastis in the Nile Delta region. She is often depicted as a lioness or a woman with the head of a lioness. Over time, her image evolved to include the depiction of a domestic cat, reflecting the importance of cats in Egyptian culture.

Bastet is the guardian of mothers, healers, enchanters, seers, performers, and musicians. She oversees both tangible and spiritual realms, safeguarding homes, women, children, and marriages. She also watches over cats, defends against diseases, fosters fertility, and assists in childbirth. Additionally, she presides over aspects of sensuality, dreams, fragrances, aesthetics, and warfare.

Linked to both the Eye of Ra and celestial bodies like the sun and moon, Bastet stands as a transitional deity—a guide for souls journeying to the afterlife. You can invoke Bastet for protection over your residence and enterprise against malevolent entities and infectious ailments.

The worship of Bastet is an example of the deep reverence ancient Egyptians had for animals, particularly cats, which were believed to be sacred and were often kept as pets. Cats were also associated with the sun god Ra and were considered to be manifestations of various protective deities, including Bastet.
