Here are some questions to ask the residency program:
1. What types of nonclinical responsibilities are there? (Research, projects, writing, administrative)
2. What research projects are the faculty and residents currently working on? Is attendance at regional and national conferences encouraged? Is it funded, and, if so, to what degree?
3. Is there time to do research? If you need to present at a national conference, will the department pay for your way there?
4. What programs exist for resident education (e.g. , lectures, journal clubs, grand rounds, board review courses,)?
5. What are the population demographics? (Indigent, insured, etc)
6. Who does airway management and who does it in trauma? Does anesthesia come down?
7. Is there conference time? Is it protected time?
8. What are common problems faced by residents in this program?
9. How's the call schedule?
10. Are there any skills labs?
11. How are procedures recorded and credentialed?
12. How do you evaluate the residents? Is there a feedback structure that allows for the resident to evaluate the program’s curriculum?
13. Is there an orientation program for incoming residents?
14. Is there a formal didactic curriculum, and what is its structure?
15. What are the informal learning opportunities (i.e., bedside rounds, etc.)?
16. Are there opportunities to do “away” rotations?
17. Is there a formal mentoring program for new residents, and do faculty serve as mentors?
