You've probably heard of rare earths, but almost certainly never of tetrataenite, a mineral with magnetic properties that we only know about from meteorites that fall from space, since it is not found naturally on Earth.

However, this compound has properties very similar to those of the most critical rare earths, and recently two separate laboratories have managed, for the first time, to synthesize it in a laboratory: the door is opened for humanity to begin producing rare earths without having than mining them, something that China has managed to control and produce, at a high ecological cost
