Everyday Grammar TV: Grammar and Libraries Part 1

VOA Learning English

Dr. J: Hi John! Are you in a library?
John: Yes, I like to come here every week.
Dr. J: We should explore a few key terms that we need to express ourselves well at the library.
John: Phrasal verbs are useful to know when you go to the library
Dr. J: A phrasal verb consists of a verb and another short words or words. Together, this combination of words means something different from what the individual words suggest.
John: Here is one example: the phrasal verb "look up."
Dr. J: “Look up” means to search for something in a reference book or on the internet.
John: We often use a noun or noun phrase after the phrasal verb "look up."
Dr. J: So, we might say, "I looked up that word."
John: We have the noun phrase "that word" after the past form of the phrasal verb "look up." I looked up what? I looked up that word.
Dr. J: But we can also use other verb forms. For example, you might say "I will look up that word," or "I need to look up that word."
John: Let's take some time to work with this idea. Use the phrasal verb "look up" and the noun phrase "the definition" to make a sentence. Pause the video to consider your answer.
Dr. J: Here is one possible answer:
I looked up the definition.
John: And that's Everyday Grammar TV.
