360Portugal - Portugal seen by a portuguese

The picturesque and delightful parish of Evoramonte (or Évora Monte) is located between the beautiful cities of Évora and Estremoz. Once of high geographical and military importance, this Alentejo town, whose walls still protect its inhabitants from above, feels like an ancient warrior who patiently awaits visitors with countless stories to tell them.
The Tower/Paço Ducal is a unique example of transitional military architecture, of the late Manueline style, with no antecedents or precedents in Portugal. It was built in 1532 and its function was never defense, basically serving as a hunting residence for the Dukes of Bragança. Its dominant and scenic position, in the middle of the plain, fully fulfills the purpose of its construction: to affirm the House of Bragança as the second most powerful in the Kingdom and giving meaning to the maxim: “after You, Us”, that is, after the King, the House of Bragança. This particularity is strongly present in the design of the building, through the Knots that surround it and which are a symbol of the Braganças heraldry, adopted by the architects responsible for its construction: the brothers Francisco and Diogo de Arruda.
