The DC shuntwound motor is used in applications where load varies and it is necessary for the motor so self regulate speed. A conveyor belt is the classic example, sometimes it is empty, and sometimes it has many heavy boxes. The DC shunt motor can keep the boxes moving by increasing torque. It does this because as the motor is moving fast on no load, the counterelectromotive force reduces current flow, then as it slows, the CEMF is reduced and torque increase because increased current in the armature.
