I cover the top 5 exercises for high hamstring pain. This is the third step in rehabbing a high hamstring injury (tendinopathy) and this stage covers some function isotonic exercises with hip flexion. In this video, five exercises are covered: 1) Slow hip thrusts, 2) Forward stepups, 3) Walking lunges, 4) Romanian deadlifts (RDL), and 5) Deadlifts. The most common high hamstring injury is called high hamstring tendinopathy, also known as proximal hamstring tendinopathy. Hamstring tendinopathy injuries are common in runners and often develop when you increase your running volume or intensity too quickly. Besides high hamstring tendinopathy, other common injuries in this area are hamstring strains or avulsion fractures.

Common symptoms of high hamstring tendinopathy include pain just below your buttocks, pain that is aggravated by activities like running or stretching deeply, and sharp localized discomfort that is tender to the touch over the proximal hamstring tendon.

The great news is that high hamstring pain can be successfully rehabbed without surgery or injections in the vast majority of cases. A comprehensive exercise plan for high hamstring tendinopathy should always include a strategic rehab program. Other treatments that can be helpful include addressing hip joint function with manipulation, IASTM or soft tissue therapy, and dry needling (see some hamstring dry needling I did by checking out the video at the end of this one.)

If you're in the beginning stages of recovering from a high hamstring injury, make sure you see our previous videos for isometric hamstring exercises (Stage 1) and isotonic exercises with minimal hip flexion (Stage 2).
