NASA Earthdata

Brief Description: This webinar introduces the ICESat2 mission and shows you how to explore, access and customize ICESat2 data with the advanced OpenAltimetry application, using NSIDC DAAC tools, and shows you how to subset, reformat and analyze the data using Python.

Detailed Description: NASA's Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite2 (ICESat2) was launched in September 2018 to measure the heights of all surfaces across the globe, including land ice, sea ice, water, and vegetation. ICESat2 carries a photoncounting laser altimeter to measure these surfaces, providing measurements every 70 centimeters along the satellite’s ground path at a rate of 10,000 laser pulses per second.

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) began distributing data to the public on May 28, 2019 with an abundance of user resources to visualize, access, and customize each data set. This webinar introduces the ICESat2 mission along with demonstrations that show you how to explore, access and customize NASA ICESat2 data. In particular, we highlight the advanced discovery and visualization features of OpenAltimetry, the ability to directly filter and access ICESat2 data from an NSIDC DAAC data set page, and programmatic Pythonbased subsetting, reformatting, and analysis resources.
