Gozo, a gem of the Maltese archipelago, the second largest island in Malta. Known for its slower pace of life and friendly residents: the Gozitans, who are proud of their island's distinct identity, often referring to Gozo as " the island of joy"

The island is home to some of the oldest freestanding structures in the world: The Ġgantija Temples, dating back to around 3600 BCE. These megalithic temples were constructed during the Neolithic period and are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Their name, Ġgantija, comes from the Maltese word "Ĕgant," meaning giant, because the immense size of the stone blocks used in their construction led locals to believe that giants had built them. The temples served as religious centres, and their sheer scale and complexity have captivated historians and archaeologists for centuries.

Connected to the belief in giants is the Legend of the Three Hills of Gozo. Long ago, when Gozo was a flat and barren island, the gods decided to bless it with beauty and fertility. To carry out this transformation, they sent three giant sisters from Sicily to shape the landscape.

The sisters carried massive bags of soil on their heads, filled with fertile earth, and their task was to spread the soil across Gozo to create rolling hills, making the land more suitable for farming. However, as they journeyed across the island, they grew weary and decided to rest. Placing their heavy bags on the ground, the soil spilled out and formed three large hills.

Realizing what they had accidentally created, the sisters were pleased with their work. They returned to Sicily, leaving behind these hills, which became Gozoā€™s most striking feature. The hills brought the island the beauty and fertility that the gods had intended, transforming the once flat landscape into the lush, hilly terrain that still characterises Gozo today.
