My flight from Terceira back to Ponta Delgada required a 7hour layover on the verdant isle of Pico, where I had just visited a few days prior. Given that my experiences on that visit were limited to the 500year old vineyards between the airport and the town of Madalena, I decided to take the opportunity to see a bit more of Pico, and planned a full circumnavigation of the island during my halfday layover.

On sheer luck, the island's only public transportation arrived late to the airport, and I was able to head 50 kilometres east to the small village of Piedade to get a glimpse of rural life, before continuing along the island's rugged south coast past the iconic Pico Volcano, back to Madalena. There, I visited the outstanding Cella Bar (lauded as one of the finest in Portugal) to sample the local Pico wine, before returning to the airport for my onward flight to the Azorean capital.
