When oil was detected in the Lora region, in northern Burgos, right on the border with Cantabria, a wave of excitement and media attention rose around these Castilian fields, where life was much like many other farming areas of the country, with people getting by just enough to survive.
But then the Americans arrived, bringing with them the promise of black gold and wealth. A black gold that, in the end, only a few got to keep, while the locals watched as their lands were taken from them and the promise of a new Texas in Burgos faded with time. Today, these wells, still full of oil, remain still and silent due to laws that prohibit drilling our land for black gold, natural gas, or any other fossil energy source. Surrounded by wind turbines, these rusted and abandoned wells stand as an openair museum, telling the story of what could have been and wasn't, in a depopulated region that lived this whole story as a mirage.
