The extensor hallucis longus muscle has its origin at the medial border of the fibula and interosseous membrane. It tapers off into a tendon above the superior extensor retinaculum. It courses mediodistally along the dorsum or back of the foot, to find its insertion at the distal phalanx of the big toe.
