F-150 Expedition Torque Converter Shudder Sound and - Instant Shudder Fixx

So I’m dealing with an unmaintained transmission that has a slight torque converter shudder.
Sometimes people misdiagnose their misfire as a torque converter problem because these two problems have a similar affect. However, they are different, and anyone with experience can easily tell them apart.

I extracted a bit of the old transmission fluid and it is dark. It’s not black but it’s very dark. I’m not sure if damage has occurred in the transmission itself, but the torque converter is obviously bad. Once you start experiencing problems, it’s usually too late. There are things you can do to restore performance; these temporary fixes could last anywhere from a day to several years, but ultimately the parts will need to be changed.

The first temporary fix I tried is instant shudder fixx. It’s known to work, and I believe I’m catching this problem early, so I think it will work.

If your torque converter started to fail and the fluid was still a little more on the red side which is how its supposed to be, it’s likely that if you just change out the torque converter and replace the fluid, everything will be fine with the transmission. Since my fluid is so dark, I think If I change the fluid, there’s a chance that the transmission will fail and I’ll be replacing these parts sooner rather than later.

The worst case scenario is that I end up replacing the transmission and or torque converter sooner rather than later. I say sooner is bad because it’s cold here now. It’s really not a bad case at all, considering what I paid for this car. My costs to solve this are between $56 and $500 dollars depending on what happens.

Torque converter shudder is caused by a worn overdrive friction clutch in the torque converter. It could also be caused by a failing TCC solenoid. To diagnose the torque converter shudder first I observed a sound and feeling similar to going over a rumble strip. This is the torque converter engaging in overdrive and faulting out while doing so. There is no way to restore the material but there are ways to prolong the life if you catch the problem early. Inevitably it will fail and need to be replaced. A misfire can feel like torque converter shutter, I used my OBDii scanner to monitor the cylinders for misfires while driving. There were no misfires. I then turned the overdrive off and the shudder no longer happened. I turned the overdrive on, the shudder came back, so it’s clearly the torque converter causing the problem.

I just bought this vehicle and didn’t feel it on the test drive, and didn’t think to look for it. Either way, the deal was good enough, that before I bought the vehicle, I knew I’d be willing to replace any component on it.

There are other things that can cause shudder, hard shifts, and other transmission problems, such as the solenoids, there are so many variables and different stories and experiences out there, this is just my experience and it might be a stepping stone for solving your issue, permanently, temporarily, or not. Ultimately, replace the transmission and / or torque converter. That’s about the worst it can get, everyone acts like it’s the end of the world.
