Shelach “Send Forth”
Numbers 13:1–15:41

Moses is commanded to send twelve spies (a leader from each tribe) into Canaan to reconnoitre the land and its bounties. After forty days they return bearing a pomegranate, a fig and a cluster of grapes so large that it needs to be carried on a pole by two people. Ten of the spies bring a report of the ferocious inhabitants of the land: giants and warriors that they believe would be too powerful to fight, a report that brings fear of the future conquest of Canaan. However two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb (the only two Israelites of their generation who would actually enter the Promised Land), contradict the other ten reports by insisting that they will easily overcome the Canaanites as God is with them.

The children of Israel bemoan their situation, crying that they would rather be back in Egypt and so, due to their ingratitude and arrogant grumbling, YAH decrees that the people must now wander the desert for forty years, during which time the generation that were released from Egypt would all die, the only exceptions being Joshua and Caleb, blessed for their faith in God. Only those who were below the age of twenty at the time that this fearful ordinance was decreed would enter the promised land four decades later. Wracked with guilt, a group of Israelites attempt to storm the land without God going before them and are subsequently crushed in battle by Amalekite and Canaanite warriors.

Following this, laws regarding certain offerings are given, along with a commandment to give a portion of any dough used to make bread to God as a consecrated offering. At this time a man breaks the laws of Shabbat by collecting firewood and is thus executed. Finally the law of the tzitzit is given, tassels that are tied onto the four corners of our garments to remind us everyday of the covenant we have made with God to follow His ways.
