Today, I set out to answer the question "why the heck were there so many virtual worlds operated by fast food franchises from about 20082011?" Truly, the phenomenon of lateaughts corporations frantically copying each others' social MMOs sprouted some bizarre and memorable games. In this retrospective, I cover the defunct kids' virtual worlds McWorld, McDonald's Happy Studio, and Club BK, as well as the single player successor apps McPlay, the Happy Meal App, and Burger King Jr. Club.
