As recently as the mid1800s, many scientists believed that the deep ocean's bottom was lifeless, featureless abyss. This changed with the development of bathymetric maps of the seafloor, which revealed some of the world's largest geological features. Global bathymetric maps have captured the publics' attention and helped revolutionize our understanding of the Earth.
