The Alakai was originally commissioned as a US Navy vessel for ferry service in Hawaii (along with another sister ship). Environmental lobby against interisland ferry service in Hawaii (whales) resulted in this ferry being brought over to the east coast and is now leased by the Canada Government from the US for ferry service between Bar Harbor, Maine and Yarmouth, NS. It spends its winters in Charleston, SC. for maintenance and storage.
