Deb Sumiec, MSW, CAPSW, is a Certified FASD Educator who was employed as a Social Worker, Probation & Parole Agent, and Criminal Investigator for the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections and the Criminal Trial Division of the Office of the State Public Defender for nearly 20 years. She has also been employed for 15 years in the fields of International Adoption and Child Welfare as an Adoption Social Worker and Trainer, Treatment Foster Care Worker, and Child & Family WellBeing Assessor. She is currently employed as a Child Advocacy Social Worker at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Deb earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Social Work from UWMilwaukee. As an undergraduate she earned a certificate in Ethnic Studies and her Master's concentration was in Direct Practice with Children & Families. She is currently a postgraduate Fellow at UWMadison's Department of Psychiatry in their Infant, Early Childhood & Family Mental Health Capstone Program. Deb also holds certifications in Screening, Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), Divorce Mediation, and as an Ages & Stages Questionnaire Trainer. Deb is currently working toward completion of her license as a Clinical Social Worker and developing a consultation firm specializing in assessment and treatment of FASD. She credits her seventeenyearold daughter, who has an Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder, as being her greatest teacher in successfully navigating life with an FASD.
