Mary manages her fibromyalgia symptoms with onceaweek aquatic therapy sessions at Pieters Family Life Center. Wellness director Barb Cacia uses a HydroWorx pool to strengthen and stretch Mary's joints, muscles and core while causing less pain than landbased therapy. This video shows the pool protocol that Barb developed for Mary.
This pool protocol aims to reduce Mary's fibromyalgia pain by loosening and strengthening Mary's muscles. As a chronic pain condition, fibromyalgia causes Mary's muscles to become very short and tight. This tightening makes the muscles crowd the joint space, resulting in the joints rubbing together and contributing to osteoarthritis. These symptoms mainly create back and hip pain for Mary, so Barb aims to stretch the muscles in those areas using a HydroWorx pool.
Aquatic therapy enables Barb and Mary to work on exercises that Mary couldn't handle on land. The reduced pressure in a HydroWorx pool allows Mary to perform many more activities without experiencing too much pain.
