Fighting to Save a Sinking Aircraft

Follow
History X

The Martin PBM Mariner was an American flying boat patrol bomber of World War II. It was used by the US Navy in bombing, antisubmarine, and transport roles.

Here’s the thing about flying boats like the PBY Catalina, the Consolidated PB2Y, and the Martin PBM Mariner… They can’t just land in any body of water. They require relatively smooth conditions, with no more than 13 foot waves, to remain intact and flyable. Anything rougher than that, and the results can be catastrophic.
