Finding Retro Game Gems in JAPAN

Follow
Robby Huang

This time during my trip to Japan, Michael and I hit up one of our favorite retro video game shops called Mandai Shoten. Their motto is that they literally have everything, and it's kind of true. Their selection of Super Nintendo games alone is staggering. I found one in particular that I have been looking for called Alcahest. A pretty awesome Super Nintendo game from the creators of the Kirby series, but it's an action RPG. The music in particular by Jun Ishikawa is amazing.

The shop also had a ton of Dragonball Z video games that I would have loved to have as a kid. Now, not so much, but it was still cool to look at. There was a bunch of Neo Geo stuff too, which is some of the most expensive games you can collect in Japan or otherwise.

Afterwards, we have tonkatsu at a random katsu restaurant. We drove on some Japanese streets to get back to Michael's house and his kids watch Power Rangers on Netflix. Afterwards I run through my pickups which include Alcahest, a Yasunori Mitsuda soundtrack, Dragon Quest IX, Ridge Racer Type 4 (for 50 yen no less), Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy VIII, Terra Phantastica (for the Sega Saturn, I had never heard of it before), Wave Race 64 Shindou (the rumble pack version), Breath of Fire 3, Breath of Fire 4, Tactics Ogre The Knight of Lodis for Gameboy Advance, Ogre Battle, Lunar 2, Dragon Force, Shining the Holy Ark, and Breath of Fire 2.
