When you tell prospective employers why you were fired from your last job, make sure you keep it to a couple simple sentences. The more you talk, the less believable you'll sound. You want to give them a couple one liners that briefly sums up why you were let go. Don't give them tons of detail, just a few facts.

"My previous company has restructured itself and as a result, let go of numerous employees".

I don't advocate lying about why you were fired or laid off. A better choice might be to tell them the truth. Tell them what you know. "that you were fired for sending an email that spoke a different message than intended." But you might need to spice it up a bit and come off with what happened. Maybe you fired because you sent a joke to a colleague that got forwarded to your boss and she didn't think it was funny. Something like that. I think you just need to expose a little more about what happened than keeping it so mysterious.
